Mitsubishi Motors commercial

I was watching Japanese commercials on TV and I thought that they were very different from American commercials so I decide to find some interesting Japanese commercials on YouTube and post them a little by little.

The first one is a commercial for the Mitsubishi Motors. This one is very emotional because the woman is going to get married tomorrow and she is driving with her dad. This commercial shows the sensitive atmosphere that the father and his daughter have when she is getting married. This commercial should attract both older men and younger women because they can think back what happened to them when they got married and feel the same atmosphere as the commercial shows.

Here is the translate for it.

I will get married tomorrow.

My father seated in the passenger seat is more talkative today.

It's been a while since I updated this blog last time but I'm glad that the blog is still running and having some visitors from all over the world! I really appreciate everyone who has been interested in Japan and visiting my blog. Anyway, my life has been kind of crazy last few years because I moved back to Japan from the US two years ago and I live in Tokyo now. As you may know, Tokyo is a very busy city and there are so many things that are very interesting. Japan's notoriously hard-working salarymen are being given a chance by the government to cut their hours in a bid to improve their health - and their fecundity. Workers who put in more than 40 hours of overtime a month will earn the right to an extra day off this month, according to a policy paper prepared by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in June. Employers will also have to pay them an extra-high rate for overtime above 30 hours, in an attempt to make companies think twice about asking their workers to burn the midnight oil. Everyone in Japan has a camera phone and they take pictures literally everywhere! But I don't agree what a funeral director says about it. I don't think that doesn't mean people no longer respect the dead. People just want to keep everything captured and now it's so easy for them to do it by means of camera phones. I have to agree though that people need to think about cell phone manners again.

"I get the sense that people no longer respect the dead. It's disturbing," a funeral director told the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.

At one ceremony several people gathered round the coffin and took out their phones to photograph the corpse as preparations were made to begin a cremation, she was quoted as saying.

I was watching TV the other night and I saw something that I wasn't expecting to see in the United States! That is Puffy AmiYumi! I was so excited to see them here. I used to like no LOVE them when I was younger in Japan. I've been to their concerts so many times and I taped every TV program they were on. I also collected their stuff like key chains, books, T-shirts, etc. Ok, I can show you my Puffy AmiYumi collections. I got a picture of them from Japan. Here it is.

I found out that many American kids love them because of this TV show. Actually Puffy came to Boston for their concert and I went to see them but I felt a little bit weird because everyone was a kid with parents. I guess they are so popular to kids not adults here...

HONNE and TATEMAE

Have you heard about HONNE and TATEMAE? If you are interested in Japan or Japanese people you should be able to tell what they are. This is one of the most important concepts of the Japanese culture. So what are they? "HONNE" is what you really think and "TATEMAE" is not what you really think but the other person might want to hear. It is something you say that makes someone feel better or avoid conflicts with the person. For example, let's think about a situation.

Takako is on the way to go out to eat with her friend Saori. She meets Saori and they are trying to decide where they eat.

Saori says "Do you want to go to a good SUSHI restaurant? One of my friends just told me about this great restaurant in Shibuya and I would like to go there!"

Takako thinks in her head, "Oh no, I just ate SUSHI for lunch today so I don't really want to eat Sushi again... But if I say no, she is going to get mad and it's not gonna be fun so I guess I should say yes".

So she says to Saori "Yeah, that's a good idea! I've wanted to try that SUSHI restaurant!"

This is TATEMAE.

If she was American, she might have said, "Oh, I just ate SUSHI for lunch so I don't want to eat it again" right? In the Japanese culture, you always have to think about other people first like what this person will think about what I say to her/him? It's not that hard for Japanese people to do this because we are used to doing it. We simply never tell what we really want or think to other people. Of course when you talk to very close friends, you use "HONNE" a lot more than "TATEMAE". So keep this mind that when you meet a Japanese person for the first time and he/she seems to agree everything you say, he/she is definitely using TATEMAE. And they are always SMILING to you when you talk to you!

Scary American Girls?

I know many American husbands having Japanese wives but almost never saw the opposite. I know why. Because Japanese guys can't handle American girls! When my friends(boys) from Japan came, I was having a party for them. I invited a lot of American girls so that I thought they would like it. What happened? They were annoyed by those American girls! Well, I had a great time there and I didn't think they were annoying so this had to do with Japanese guys. I tried to recall what Japanese guys expect from girls then this thought came to my mind. Many Japanese guys want girls to be submissive, quiet, and feminine. They need to be bosses because of the Japanese guy's background which is SAMURAI. They don't like to be directed by girls that's why they couldn't stand the American girls. After the party, one of my American friends said this.

"Did they(Japanese guys) get scared by us? Were we too crazy?"

I think American girls are a lot of fun.

I got the comment on the Sushi video and I should explain what is and is not true about the video. I don't want you to get embarrassed when you go to a Sushi restaurant in Japan! I will explain about the video.

If you haven't seen the movie, here is a link to the SUSHI video.

Sushi Video

1. How to enter a sushi shop was NOT true! Otherwise, you would have to carry a ruler when you go out to eat Sushi!

2. You could say "Are you still open?" but you don’t have to.

3. You DON’T have to be guilty going to a Sushi-shop alone!

4. You may ask "Is this seat taken" to other customers.

5. Some Sushi restaurants have waiters but if not, you may order the chef directly.

6. There are "Ohotoro", "Chutoro" and "Toro" and they indicate the different parts of Tuna, not qualities. Ohotoro is the most expensive one and Toro is the cheapest one however, Toro is NOT a junk food for low income earners! Toro is NOT recycled fish and it has REAL rice! Toro is still more expensive than regular Tuna. Don’t worry there is no such food for low income earners in a Sushi restaurant!

7. Pouring beer for each other is TRUE. In business, you must pour beer for your boss first!

8."Maa maa maa maa" "Oh toh toh toh", we actually say this however you don’t have to.

9. "Women must pour for men", I' m not sure about this part. I don’t think it’s a must but many women still do that for men.

10. Sushi is served a thing looks like "GETA" but they NEVER actually wear that home!! That part was NOT true.

11. Don’t worry "GARI" is just a pickled ginger! The Japanese all know that.

12. How to eat Sushi was NOT true! There is NO rule how much you put soy sauce and how to hold Sushi! However, turning over Sushi when you put soy sauce is true because if you put soy sauce on rice, rice would fall to pieces and you don’t want that happen.

13. In the movie, he puts soy sauce way too much! You don’t want to do that.

14. The towel was NOT called "ZOUKIN"! It is called "OTEFUKI" which means wet towel for your hands. "ZOUKIN" is a floor cloth or mop!

15. The towel is always CLEAN!! It is just for your hands and they wash it after you use it every time! Who respects towels!!!

16. The chef is called "Taisho". This is true but I don’t know if they have a secret personal history..

17. The movie showed the chef’s nails and they were dirty but it is unusual. The chefs maintain their hands and nails clean so don’t get freaked out by the scene.

18. You do NOT have to say "it was delicious" if the Sushi was bad. Just don’t say anything! 19. The Sushi restaurants DON’T have illegal stuff!! We DON’T eat pandas or turtles!!

20. I never did the cross finger thing when finishing eating so I don’t think that was true.

21. The payment part, that’s actually true. People who are in higher social positions usually want to pay. Of course they don’t pay for you every time so you have to see your situation when you leave.

22. "Ryosyusyo" is just a receipt.24. There is sometimes salt outside the door but that’s NOT for you to lick. Don’t do that like the movie!! They have it because of the religious reason.

100 yen SUSHI restaurants

Some Americans think that all Japanese people eat SUSHI every day! It's not true at all. I love SUSHI but I don't eat it every day. However SUSHI is getting cheaper and cheaper and there are many 100 yen SUSHI restaurants in Japan. The pictures show some SUSHI from one of the 100 yen restaurants. They are pretty good.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Have you guys seen the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha"? I heard that this movie was designed to OFFEND Japanese men. I haven’t seen it so I don’t have any clue about this movie. I would like to see it to know that if I really get offended by this movie. I know a funny story about this movie.

When the director was looking for actors for the movie, they couldn’t find enough Japanese actors who speak English well so they used Chinese actors instead. I know why. That’s because many Japanese people are perfectionists so even they could speak English with Japanese accents, they don’t want to speak it on public. Anyway, if you have any comments about the movie, please let me know!

A 4-year-old Tokyo girl, who suffered serious head injuries after being abused
by her father for 'stealing' candy from the refrigerator, has died at a

Have you ever heard a Japanese old saying “a sticking nail will be hammered in”? This saying basically means that don’t make you stand out. Is that weird to you Americans? I think so. The Japanese has the collectivism culture.

Collectivism, in general, is a term used to describe a theoretical or practical
emphasis on the group, as opposed to (and seen by many of its opponents to be at
the expense of) the individual. Some psychologists define collectivism as a
syndrome of attitudes and behaviors based on the belief that the basic unit of

So if you want to live in Japan, you need to remember that. Especially when you are in a group, you never express what you want. For example, when deciding where to eat, if somebody asks you “What kind of food do you want?” then you need to say, “NANDEMO IIYO” which means “I don’t care”. You never say “I want to eat Chinese food!” at first. You have to see what other people say first then you may add some suggestions later. That’s how the Japanese people show politeness.

I went to a liquor store one day and I was surprised to see so many kinds of Japanese Sake at the store! I guess American people like it, don’t you? By the way, how do you pronounce Sake?

You guys probably say “saki”, right? But Japanese people don’t. We pronounce “Sa K”. The second part is pronounced just like a character “K”. I checked the NTT DOCOMO site (Japan's biggest cell phone company) and they have new Sony cell phones. SO902i has the 3 mega pixel digital camera! I guess they don’t need a digital camera itself anymore.

In Japan, cell phone companies upgrade their phones almost every 6 months so Japanese people are so busy upgrading their phones. Actually I had 7 different cell phones within 4 years. I guess this is the Japanese way…

Are Japanese people liars? No. They don’t simply say what they really think to you if they don’t know you well. Japanese culture is the high-context culture which refers to societies or groups where people have close connections over a long period of time so they take longer time to express themselves to people than American people.

I would like to introduce myself since this is my first post.

My name is Roshi and I'm originally from Tokyo Japan.
I've been living in the United States for 5 years and I love being here very much.

I've had so many interesting experiences since I moved to America.

Why?

Because of the differences between the American culture and Japanese culture.
Yes, there are so many differences.

I've noticed because I have an American roommate.
We always talk about it.

"You are so weird!!"

That's the common ending for both of us.
